Gloves,<br \/>\nthe Good Folk, that is,<br \/>\nand you&#8217;d better not forget it if you think to cut them down.<\/p>\n<p>In the Faery Glen<br \/>\non the Isle of Skye,<br \/>\nfoxgloves stand like watchful sentinels of the Hidden People.<br \/>\nOn Highland hillsides they march in crimson,<br \/>\nlike the hosts of trooping faeries.<\/p>\n<p>In Ireland\u2019s wooded hollows,<br \/>\nglowing purple in the dusk,<br \/>\nfoxglove is the lus na mban sidhe,<br \/>\nthe Plant of the Faery Woman.<\/p>\n<p>In Donegal, the blossoms are me\u00edr\u00edn\u00ed p\u00faca, Puck&#8217;s fingers,<br \/>\nor m\u00e9aracan s\u00eddhe, Shilly Thimbles, Thimbles of the S\u00eddhe.<br \/>\nWhen a foxglove bows its head, a faery is passing by.<br \/>\nFaeries have been seen dancing beneath them in the Welsh Marches, not so long ago.<br \/>\nAnd in Ireland, according to a story told to Yeats, they often hide under the leaves<br \/>\nwhere the casual observer mistakes their red caps for the crimson bells.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/bee-on-foxglove-flower-29941281354257b0Dh.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-57 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/bee-on-foxglove-flower-29941281354257b0Dh-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"bee-on-foxglove-flower-29941281354257b0Dh\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/bee-on-foxglove-flower-29941281354257b0Dh-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/bee-on-foxglove-flower-29941281354257b0Dh.jpg 471w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Foxgloves are also called bee-catchers and beehives in the West Country.<br \/>\nIt is said that the path of brown and white spots on the floor of each bell are<br \/>\nthe marks of elven fingers,<br \/>\ndesigned to lead the bee towards the nectar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whoever was responsible,<br \/>\nfoxgloves have certainly been designed<br \/>\nwith the foraging bee in mind.<br \/>\nEach bell has a projecting lower lip for a landing pad,<br \/>\nfrom which the bee can proceed down the illuminated runway.<br \/>\nThe anthers of the stamens lie flat along the inside &#8220;roof&#8221; of the bell<br \/>\nso that its pollen rubs off on the bee\u2019s back.<br \/>\nThe bee then transfers the pollen to the next flower enabling it to produce seeds:<br \/>\n1 to 2 million from each plant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/foxglove-bells-white.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-58\" src=\"http:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/foxglove-bells-white-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"foxglove-bells-white\" width=\"209\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/foxglove-bells-white-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/foxglove-bells-white.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a>Foxgloves have a darker side:<br \/>\nThey belong to the dead<br \/>\nwhose blood and bones make fertile soil.<br \/>\nSo their blossoms are also<br \/>\nDead Man&#8217;s Thimbles,<br \/>\nDead Man\u2019s Bellows, (the phallus)<br \/>\nor, in Scotland, ciochan nan cailleachan marblia:<br \/>\nDead old woman&#8217;s paps.<br \/>\nIn Wales they are Dead Men\u2019s Bells.<br \/>\nIf you hear them ringing, you will not be long for this world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/foxglove.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-59 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/foxglove-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"foxglove\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/foxglove-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/chalicecentre.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/foxglove.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Meddle with a foxglove<br \/>\nand you may become faery-struck.<br \/>\nYet it can also cure any misfortune caused by the faeries.<br \/>\nIf a child is Taken and a squalling changeling left in its place,<br \/>\nplace foxglove leaves beneath its crib.<br \/>\nThe faeries will bring back the stolen child.<\/p>\n<p>In Ireland it is <em>lus-mor<\/em>, the Great Plant,<br \/>\nbecause of its healing virtues.<br \/>\nAnd in Wales it was one of the healing herbs<br \/>\ntaught by the faery woman of Llyn y Fan Fach to her half-human sons,<br \/>\nwho became the famous Physicians of Myddfai.
